Deon Jamar is a Detroit native whose roots stem from the crates of family. Coming from a household where his father was a DJ, turntables and records were always around. It was in his discovery of Detroit’s underground where he found the inspiration to follow in his father’s footsteps.
Deon’s DJ career began in 2015 as resident DJ & organizer for the monthly hip-hop showcase “Bluecollar Gentleman”.
During this time he would also begin working with Theo Parrish to promote the Music Gallery party series and also working behind the scenes for the Sound Signature record label. This work would culminate in a co-curation role for the DJ Kicks compilation “Detroit Forward” (K7 Records) where he enlisted hometown artists to represent the progressive sounds of today. His track, “North End Funk”, was selected to join the mix, making his production credit debut.
With over a decade of experience in Detroit’s music community, Deon has been seasoned by the many worlds within. Ranging from the city’s hip-hop scene, to the world of underground dance music, and even serving as resident DJ for DeSean Jones’ Urban Art Orchestra.
All of these worlds inform the musical range in his selection. Inspired by everything from jazz, funk, & soul to more modern music forms like hip-hop, house, techno, & brokenbeat. His sets aim to use elements from all these forms with culture in mind.
Outside of Detroit, Deon plays clubs often in NY (Nowadays, Public Records, Good Room) & most notably his recurring appearance at the Musicland party. Internationally he’s played in Toronto (Masonic Temple), Berlin (Globus/Tresor), & London (E1).
Aside from just playing gigs, Deon also enjoys programming events of his own such as the “Healin’ Session” party series and the music and art exhibition, “Black Music”.
Black Music has since evolved into the home for Deon’s original productions. Launching the label with his debut album “Altars”.

Altars is the debut EP from Detroit’s own Deon Jamar.
This album kicks off the catalog of his newly founded record label, Black Music.
Black Music was originally an art exhibit, concert, and party series founded by Deon and Brian Oscar (Wrckles). Inspired by the legacy of those before and the work of peers today, these events were made to honor the lineage while also demonstrating the golden cord that connects all of our music throughout genre and era. Fusing these worlds together informs the DJ as well as the producer. A radical objection to industry standards, leaning more into the energy and depth of sound.
Black Music, the label, will carry this same tradition.
